What Makes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Different From Other Sports

Martial arts are an extremely popular form of entertainment and exercise for young and mature athletes alike. Unlike team sports, participating in martial arts relies on individual skill allowing one person to show dominance over the other. There are numerous disciplines of martial arts, but unfortunately there is a considerable amount of confusion leading to people interested in becoming involved in martial arts, or the loved ones of those who are involved or wish to become involved, maintaining misconceptions about the discipline chosen. Many people upon hearing "martial arts" will immediately think of karate and proclaim their preteen children have accomplished the highest level of the discipline. What they don't understand is there are many other disciplines, and many other goals associated with these disciplines.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

One of the most misunderstood martial arts disciplines is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Many have not heard of this discipline, or have a skewed concept of it that closely mimics karate or other disciplines. They immediately envision pairs of fighters kicking, punching and hitting one another until one of them is either knocked out or simply chooses not to fight any longer. This is not at all what Jiu Jitsu is.

To understand what makes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - aka bjj in nyc -- different from other disciplines, it is helpful to understand the two basic categories of martial arts. The first is striking. This includes such practices as karate, kung fu, boxing and muay thai. With this type of martial arts, fighters use physical striking of the opponent in the form of kicking, punching, hitting, kneeing or holding for the purpose of causing pain and the submission of the opponent.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a "grappling" martial arts style. This means that the opponents are not permitted to use any form of striking blow or holds that have the goal of injuring or incapacitating the opponent. Instead, grappling relies on pinning and joint manipulation aimed at convincing the opponent he should no longer fight. No one participating in Jiu Jitsu is permitted to throw his opponent onto his head or use any form of strike in the course of the match.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can offer a variety of benefits including self-confidence, highly effective exercise for weight loss, strengthening and conditioning, exceptional versatility that allows people from all experience levels to participate in and enjoy the discipline, even when matched with someone of a different experience level. While use of the discipline for self-defense is absolutely possible for those who understand the basic techniques, most who learn these skills use them for competition, physical fitness and enjoyment.

What Went Wrong With Karate

I say Karate, but that includes Kung Fu, Taekwondo, Kenpo, or whatever. I am speaking of the martial arts on the whole.

To understand what has happened to the Martial Arts one needs to understand what has happened to them first.

What has happened is the broad institutionalization of mankind. Sounds big, but it means that instead of going to school to become more aware, one goes to school to learn how to get along, and to memorize a bunch of tricks so that he can work for somebody else.

Not much of a future, eh?

But it's true...people in school are not taught how to start a business, but how to work for somebody else.

Now, in the martial arts there is a difference, and this difference is Awareness. In the martial arts one is taught how to actually be Aware, how to solve the problems of the universe no matter how frantic they become, to keep a cool head and prevail.

The problem, unfortunately, is that the martial arts have become tainted. People learn them so they can beat somebody up, or win a trophy, or get a belt. And, underlying this corruption, is the simple laziness that modern schooling imparts.

I remember one class I was teaching, and one fellow suddenly walked out of the class, right out of the forms and sweat and bruises and everything, and got himself a glass of water.

"What did you just do?" I asked, amazed.

"I was thirsty," the fellow said.

"So you're going to stop a fight, right in the middle of being punched, and get a glass of water?"

"But I can get a glass of water when I get thirsty in school," the dull one explained, as if I was the dull one.

He didn't understand, and the time for words was long passed. This was a lesson he should have learned lo-o-ong ago. This was a lesson his parents should have been spanked for for not teaching him.

"Line up," I commanded the class. And, to the dull one, "We are going to freestyle you, one by one, until you are thirsty and can't breath and are exhausted and just want to quit. And if you manage not to quit, I'll let you stay in class."

Needless to say, the dull fellow became a wide-eyed fellow, and in the best sense of the word. Simply, he learned that the martial arts aren't a class, they are a method to survival, and only if you are willing to put aside your designer water and engage in real combat, are you going to become a living, breathing, more aware person.

Stop being a work a day fool and become Aware. Go to MonsterMartialArts.com and learn the most efficient methods for gaining Awareness through the martial Arts in the world. Karate or Tai Chi chuan or whatever martial art you prefer, you can undo the institutionalized education you have been tainted with.

Why Signing Up Your Kids for Martial Arts Classes Is One of the Best Ideas (Emery Lukas)

No matter what your stance on violence and fighting in general may be, if you're a responsible parent you owe it to your kids to research the idea of signing them up for some professional martial arts classes, if you want to give them numerous benefits and advantages in their lives. This is not gender specific, and your kids can start practicing at pretty much any age over a certain (low) barrier, but the general consensus is that the sooner you get them started on this, the better.

There are numerous benefits to martial arts which remain unseen until many years later when they manifest themselves in the behavior of the children. The most obvious advantage is that your kids will grow up to be much more adept physically, and will have an easier time with sports. This can have a very positive impact on their lives both in terms of health as well as socially!

Furthermore, knowing martial arts can give a person a certain level of confidence as they will never be intimidated by anyone else. This is not just about beating up the guy that's talking you down - it goes much deeper than that, and a good, thorough understanding of martial arts can build up a really strong, dedicated character which many people are lacking when they're grown up.

This translates into improved discipline too. It's very important to be disciplined and persistent if you want to succeed in martial arts, and this is something that carries over into your everyday life if you practice that sport regularly. It's very common that children who've been practicing martial arts from an early age are more responsible in their studies and other duties, and willing to try harder when faced with a difficult problem, instead of giving up.

And then there's the sheer competitive aspect of the sport, which is very strongly emphasized with martial arts. This can help your kids grow up to be more ambitious and competitive, another strong benefit in their later years. So as a whole, there's a lot that sports like Judo or even MMA can do for children, as long as you get them started on them early enough.

So whenever you have some time, just do some brief research and find out where the best kids' gyms are in your local area. Learn what styles are being offered at each place and try to make an informed decision when it comes to picking a specific one for your kids. This is going to be somewhat important as each fighting sport emphasizes different things, and it's good to be familiar with those things if you want your kids to learn something that will benefit them in the way you want.

Before you know it, your kids will be growing up to be the best they can be, and they'll be thanking you for giving them that advantage early in their lives for as long as you can imagine, you can be sure of that.

So are you searching for a specialised club in Perth where players of all ages and levels could train and learn judo? Judo International offers a wide range of classes for children as young as 5 through to adults. For more details visit their website judointernational.com.
