Shakin' all over

S. Korea -- A skyscraper in Seoul reportedly had to be evacuated during a vigorous workout recently.

It is said that the cause for the evacuation was a group of middle-aged people doing Tae Bo (a fitness workout which combines taekwondo and boxing). Allegedly, this group exercise caused tremors, which in turn set of the need for evacuating the high rise building.

The owners of the building said the upper floors of the tower was shaking for 10 minutes, as a result of the group exercise on the 12th floor gym.

And who said that middle-aged people doing Tae Bo isn't dangerous stuff... :-)

Taekwondo wrestlers? Really?

Last time I checked, this art/sport seen here on the left was no wresslin' thing.

Kicking? Yup ... a lot of it Wrestling? No.

So, it could be tempting to ask what kind of mind-altering drugs the reporters from news.az have been on when they wrote about the 'Azerbaijani taekwondo wrestlers' and their participation in The World Championship being held in Gyeongju, Korea.

Oh, the joy and wonders of ignorance...

"Calligra-fu"

China -- Adding another dimension to martial arts, a Chinese man named Ba is here seen combining kung fu moves and calligraphy in front of onlookers at a park in Kaifeng, Henan province.

The 60-year-old man - dressed in traditional robes - is using a long and heavy (2 metes - 5kg) brush and water to create his intricate calligraphy. The signs can only last a few minutes before they vanish in the sun, according to metro.co.uk.

As in Japan and Korea, there's a deep cultural relationship in China between calligraphy and martial arts. Warriors and martial arts masters are expected to balance their lives by also being schooled in aesthetic practices like calligraphy.

Grandma kwon do

Not bad at all... In fact, very cool :-)

Here we have someone past her teens who actually have spent some time to achieve her black belt (and no, two to three years is not some time).

And not only that, the grandmother correctly explains some of the the difference between Japanese karate and Korean taekwondo - more than a lot of the MacDojo so-called "karate black belt" holders out there is capable of.

North Carolina -- At the age of 59, LaVerne Tysinger from Denton began tae kwon do lessons at the age of 59 and then set a goal for herself — to attain a black belt before she turned 65, according to the-dispatch.com.

Introduction to Hapkido

Hapkido (Hap - Joining / Harmony) (Ki – Internal Chi) (Do – Way) which translate to the way of joining the energy contains both long and close range fighting techniques.

Long Range: kicking, hand strikes
Close Range: pressure point, joint-locks, throws

Hapkido to me is like a son of Jujutsu and a brother to Judo, as Hapkido is like a Korean version of modified Jujutsu. As most Korean martial art lover might know, Hapkido is consider as the great grandfather of Taekwondo which was evolved from Taekyeon.

If you are a nunchuck lover you might love this art as well, Hapkido is one of the few rare martial art that uses weapons such as rope and nunchuks, besides this two other weapons also consists of cane, short stick, staff and sword.

Hapkido emphasize on non-resisting movements and circular motion which is quite similiar to taichi where the are will try to avoid using strength against opponent’s strength but using the footwork and body positioning as an advantage towards the opponent.

The main principles of Hapkido is following the middle way, not like Jujutsu that focus on the soft scale or Taekwondo who focus on the hard scale, in Hapkido, it is a combination of both, from throws and locks to punches and kicks.

In the main principles of Hapkido, it is alter broken down to another 3 principles which is

1)Hwa (Non-resistance principle) – Not hitting back when attacked, but used it’s momentum towards one’s advantage

2)Won (Circular movement principle) – Using opponent’s power to redirect the power back to himself

3)Yu (Harmony Principle) – Just like a flow of water, when we try to cut the water, the water will move and wrap around the blade to sink it

Hapkido derived from the Jujutsu system that was taught by Master Choi Yong Sul (1899-1986) who brought the art back from Japan, and adding additional Kicks and Striking techniques to make Hapkido whole. Later Master Suh Bok Sub who is one of Master Choi’s first student opened up the first dojang/dojo known as Hapki Yu Kwon Sool Dojang which later the name was changed to Hapkido

Master Kim Moo Hong who is another of Master Choi’s student who plays an important role in the history of Hapkido developed many other further types of kicks used in Hapkido today. Also Master Kim founded the Korean Hapkido Association and later merge the association with groups of Hapkido practitioner lead by Ji Han Jae and Myung Jae Nam to form the current Republic of Korea Hapkido Association in 1973.

Master Ji Jan Jae who is also the trainer for the bodyguards of Korean President Park Jung Hee. Master Ji incorporated kicking and punching techniques from “The Traditional Style of Korean Martial Arts” Also with the support of the Head of Security Forces, Master Ji later founded Dae Han Hapkido Hyub Hwe which is also know as Dae Han Hapkido Association which was later merged with Master Kim and Master Myung’s Association. And if you are interested to check our Master Ji’ moves, you can check out Bruce Lee’s movie called Game of Death which Master Ji co-starred in.

Master Myung Jae Nam is the founder of Korea Hapki Association also know as Hangook Hapki Hwe which was later merged with Master Ji and Master Kim’s association that formed Republic of Korea Hapkido Association. Although not much are written about Master Myung, but he is a very influential person in the world of Hapkido. It was till later where Master Myung decided to breakaway from the Hapkido Association and focus on promoting a new style that he created known as Hankido

Introduction to Taekwondo

Image Taken from: http://www.nyctkd.com/

Taekwondo is Devided into 2 Federations, ITF (Internatinal Taekwondo Federation) and WTF (World Taekwondo Federation) The name "TaeKwonDo" means Tae = Kick, Kwon = Punch, Do = Way or better known as "The way of Kick and Punch" although the martial arts focus more on it's deadly kicks. The is an arguement on how Taekwondo was founder, some mention that it is the earlier form of Korean Martial Arts some 2000 years ago and some states that it was influenced by neighbouring countries such as Karate from Japan. The earliest recorded date goes all the way back to 50BC. Tae Kyon (Subak) is considered the earliest known form of Taekwondo and now it has evolved into an Olympic Sport.

According to worldtaekwondo.com, although the 1st appearence of Taekwondo is during the period of the Goguryo kingdom, The credit still goes to Silla's warriors (known as Hwarang) as they carries the responsibility on spreading the martial art. Silla was the smallest of the three kingdoms (of Goguryeo, Silla and Baekje) and often being attacked by Pirates and received help from Goguyyeo Kingdom and a few selected warriors from Sillan were trained in Tae Kyon by the Martial Art Masters from Goguyyeo and these warriors are known as Hwarang. The Hwarang's Studies include Tae Kyon, History, the Philisophy from China's most famous philosopher Confucius, ethics, Buddhist Morality, and military tactics.

The 6 basic principals (5 codes of human conduct)that the Hwarang warriors follows were loyalty, filial duty, trustworthiness, valor, and justice and this codes were written by a Buddhist scholar (Won Gwang) and Taek Kyon was spread throughout the whole Korea because of Hwarang Warriors.

During the the first half of the Yi Gynasty (1397 to 1907) Tae Kyon's books was widely spread with the intention to be taught to the Public as perviously it is only taught in the military. But the glory soon came to an near extinction due to political conflicts and the lack of interest causes Tae Kyon to become fragmented and scarcely practiced throughout the country.

Due to invasion from the Japanese in 1909, Tae Kyon made a big come back and many Koreans trained in Tae Kyon secretly in Buddhist temples Japan invaded Korea for 36 years and in 1945 when Korea is liberated there are variations of Tae Kyon introduced due to influence from other martial arts.

According to world taekwondo.com The first Taekwondo school (Kwan) started in Yong Chun, Seoul in year 1945 and many different school were opened from 1945 through 1960 and each claimed to be teaching the traditional Subak. This lead to different names such as Soo Bahk Do, Kwon Bop, Kong Soo Do, Tae Soo Do and Kang Soo Do. The Glory of Taekwondo came in 1952 there President Syngman Rhee was amaized by the performance of Tae Hi Nam and ordered all Korean soldiers to learn the Arts of Tae Kyon as a matodory subject.

The most historic day for Teakwondo is on 11 April 1955 where all the Tae Kyon Masters decided to merge their styles into one and was given the name of Tae Soo Do, but later changed into Taekwondo by General Hong Hi Choi (the 1st President of Korea Taekwondo Association. In1966 Choi founded the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF), which also served as president. and later moved the ITF headquarters to Montreal, Canada, from where he concentrated on spreading Taekwondo internationally.

Young-wun Kim the 2nd President of KTA dissolved the ITF's connection with the KTA and created a new governing body called the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) in 1973. WTF is the official organization that is recognized by the Korean government as an international regulating body for Taekwondo. The World Taekwondo Federation has since made a major effort to standardize tournament rules and organize world class competitions. Later WTF became an affiliate of "the General Assembly of International Sports Federation" (GAISF), WTF was recognized by IOC in July 1980 and Taekwondo was designated in 1982 as the Official Demonstration Sports for the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988

Since the modern day Taekwondo's birth in 1955, its has spread rapidly across the globe as as sport and over 30 million was reported to be Taekwondo practitioner in more than 156 countries.

Besides WTF and ITF, the latest member of the family is founded under the leadership of Grand Master Park Jung Tae (9th Dan Black Belt) known as The Global Taekwon-Do Federation (GTF). Grand Master Park Jung Tae is known as "People's Master" due to his unique ways of teaching and has bought Taekwondo to another level.
