Why do only boxing or judo, when you can do both? Introducing, Mixed Martial Arts! (Hana Reed)

Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA as it is commonly abbreviated to, is a combat sport that allows techniques to be used from various other combat sports. Components of Mixed Martial Arts are taken from sports such as boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, karate and judo.

It is a sport where physical force between the players is well within the rules of the game, and as such appropriate MMA clothing needs to be worn by the players.

The only MMA clothes for men are shorts as this sport requires its male fighters to be bare-chested. Any other items of clothing could potentially hinder or aid particular moves, therefore attire is minimal. MMA clothes for female fighters are shorts and sports bras.

Other MMA gear includes items such as groin guards for male fighters, and gloves and mouthguards for both male and female fighters. Quality MMA gear in the UK can be purchased from various sources; shop MMA clothing from your local high street sports shop, or online stores.

MMA clothing for amateur fighters however, differs slightly. Amateurs, in addition to shorts and gloves, are required to wear knee pads and head guards.

Although the techniques used in Mixed Martial Arts were practiced in various countries across the globe as far back as the early Olympics, its modern embodiment was established only in the 20th century. The United Kingdom is a member of The International Mixed Martial Arts Federation, which determines an international structure of the game. However, only 19 countries are a member of the Federation, so therefore, the rules of Mixed Martial Arts differ somewhat from country to country. There is also a different set of rules for female fighters.

The techniques used in Mixed Martial Arts fall into two groups, striking techniques and grappling techniques, both standing up and on the ground. Fighters need to be proficient in both areas in order to be competent in the sport. Players are permitted to punch, kick, elbow, submission hold, choke, take-down, etc. their opponents and as such, the chances of injury are high. Despite this, the injury rates of Mixed Martial Arts are on par with those of other combat sports and the number of documented deaths are quite low.

Mixed Martial Arts is a very popular and fast-growing sport. This is due to the fact that players who are trained in even one combat sport can take part due to the flexible nature of this sport, making this a sport for anyone and everyone.

MMA banned in Thailand

Muay Thai - Illustration from Flickr.com
Really, MMA banned in Thailand? It definitely appears to be the case, somethings which appears kind of odd in a country where the hard hitting fighters of Muay Thai are national heroes and the martial art - considered brutal by many - is the national sport.

Apparently mixed martial arts has been deemed to be 'too brutal' by the governing Thai sports authorities.

Makes me wonder if there isn't some form of political pressure behind this decision.

MMA banned in Thailand

Here's a small excerpt of what bangkokpost.com has to say about this kind of strange move.
SAT officials met this week to discuss whether holding an MMA event was lawful or not following a request from a private company and they finally agreed that under the 1999 boxing law, it is unlawful to stage an MMA event in Thailand.
"Organising a MMA event here would hurt the image of Muay Thai," Sakol said.
There have been two MMA events held in Bangkok and neither were approved by the SAT, according to Sakol. He said the SAT was asking the Interior Ministry's legal advisors to consider action against any MMA organisers.
"If you want to do this kind of business, you should do it in another country," Sakol said. "Organising MMA here could mislead the public into believing that Muay Thai is brutal."
So there you have it - apparently MMA is too brutal, but Muay Thai is OK. Weird logic if you ask me. What's your opinion?

Shakin' all over

S. Korea -- A skyscraper in Seoul reportedly had to be evacuated during a vigorous workout recently.

It is said that the cause for the evacuation was a group of middle-aged people doing Tae Bo (a fitness workout which combines taekwondo and boxing). Allegedly, this group exercise caused tremors, which in turn set of the need for evacuating the high rise building.

The owners of the building said the upper floors of the tower was shaking for 10 minutes, as a result of the group exercise on the 12th floor gym.

And who said that middle-aged people doing Tae Bo isn't dangerous stuff... :-)

Lack of karate discipline?

UK -- A karate-trained, 17-year-old youth, reportedly used his martial arts skills against a 70-year-old man, according to thisissouthdevon.co.uk.

A courtroom in Exeter heard the teenager claimed his actions were purely self-defense while he explained how he protected himself against an attack by a the senior citizen in Torquay.

The young defendant admitted he had punched the older man and that he had used a martial arts move to stop him getting up off the ground on July 30, 2010.

The teenager told the court that he had done boxing and karate training and boxing in the past and all of them teach discipline and self-defense.

My thought is that it is one thing to be taught discipline - another thing all together is showing it. Beating down a 70-year-old man i "self-defense"... Right...
