Kumite or sparring is another important aspect. This type of free fighting is practiced when several martial artists spar with each other. Sparring can hone precision, balance and accuracy as it requires a lot of control. Strict rules are applied when sparring and individuals are expected to adhere to them. Muay Thai: Not Just A Combat Sport (Rose Essn)

The martial arts are associated with strength of mind, body and discipline. We usually become familiar with them from television and movies where experts seem to fly through space landing punches and kicks that literally knock a person out. But these ancient traditional systems are more than just combat sports: they offer a dizzying list of health benefits.

Among the many disciplines of martial arts is muay Thai, a Thailand-based combat sport that combines stand-up striking with stand-up grappling. As physically and mentally challenging as the rest of the martial art forms, its popularity rose in the 20th century.

Muay Thai uses a range of movements with the limbs. This combination of techniques means students learn how to use their bodies fully. Being a full-contact sport, much emphasis is given to punches and kicks, jabs, hooks, uppercuts, kicking and foot-thrusts.

Strength and stamina aside, muay Thai benefits a person in many ways. A strong body is developed throughout training to build resistance to disease and illness. This, for many, is reason enough to start practicing the sport.

* Physical fitness doesn't only improve physical strength: agility is enhanced as is range of motion. The last is compromised as one ages but if a comparison is made between a person who studies muay Thai and another who doesn't, the differences become painfully obvious. It's important to note that proper training can minimize the risk of injury to the lower body in muay Thai students.

* Regular training increases the metabolism which means a leaner body that's less prone to gaining weight and obesity-related health conditions. Of course, a well-balanced diet plays an important role but the demands of the sport counter weight gain to a high degree.

* Increased coordination is another physical benefit. The brain is trained to stay alert which not only increases the odds of survival in real-life situations but it coordinates with the body to increase confidence and self-awareness.

Mental conditioning is considered more important than physical prowess not only in muay Thai and the rest of the martial arts but in other areas of life.

* A 'never give up' attitude is cultivated and applied to all spheres of life. Mental discipline, courage and self-confidence are enhanced, three qualities that most of us would admit we're lacking in. Coupled with physical training, they give a person powerful tools not just in the arena but in the way we lead our lives and what to do in potentially life-threatening situations.

* Muay Thai provides a great outlet for stress. It teaches a person how to channel frustrations, depression and anxiety, common problems faced by many today. Self-control is a key element and regular training combines the various teachings to help a person go through life armed with a calm mind and a take-charge attitude.

Rounding off the list of benefits is building social bonds. Like most sports, muay Thai is not isolated in that it requires the participation of teachers and trainees. It helps foster ties with classmates and cultivates sportsmanship. Competitiveness increases but is tempered with camaraderie and respect for one another.

Because it centers around discipline, obedience to teachers and referees is learnt. Like most martial arts, adherence to rules is vital and this spills over to other areas of life. Ultimately, the physical, mental and social benefits form core values of discipline, self-control, respect and a sense of justice.

Martial arts will increase your coordination and it will make you stronger and flexible in their own way. It can transform the way you think. Looking for the finest martial arts Brampton has to offer? Click here for additional details!

What's the Best Sport in the World?

Mixed Martial Arts and here's 9 reasons why..

1. One and Only 1 Title

There's only one top dog in UFC. The sport doesn't simply hand a title over to a fighter since he occurred to make it to the fight that night. It takes effort, commitment and also an appreciative winning streak to grab the glory of true championship. Unlike the plentiful championship belts that wrap themselves around a handful of boxers, mixed martial arts - particularly, the UFC - just possesses one belt for each weight class.

2. All Year Round Action

Mixed martial arts has the UFC, which is the most significant promoter in the world. Between January and December, the UFC multitudes many parties, whether through pay-per-view, FOX, FX, FUEL TV or even Facebook. If they have the resources, why not use them? With eight various weight classes delivering countless entertaining fighters, the UFC has had the ability to supply its followers advantageous activity all year long. Now, while lots of people would say their attempts have been too much, just how can you badger the provider for showcasing its product? A lot of sports, possibly besides tennis as well as golf, cannot say that. Their timetables are limited. And to believe, these amounts are just from the UFC. Envision what some other MMA promoters can contribute to the formula.

3. No Ownership

The majority of sports managers, minus the few people in charge that really care about the sport, only care about generating income. That's all well and great considering it's their personal cash their putting on the line, it still eliminates from the sport's integrity. Whether it's the wellness of their players, the financial durability of their employees or the total well-being of their team, managers are commonly ducking as well as escaping morally vital obligations in favor of monetary success. Yet in mixed martial arts, where individual owners are as plentiful as non-fighters, it's every guy for himself. Sure, providers like the UFC run the world of MMA and are often mocked for not paying their fighters nearly enough, but the truth of the concern is that nobody is making these competitors do something they do not wish to. Each guy has his personal opportunity at reaping the benefits of sponsorship while putting in the amount of time as well as effort that they deem needed.

4. Transparency

Don't worry, because with no whining, no scandals, no cash mongers and no cereal box title belts. This sport is as determined as it can be. Aside from the periodic blips in the system like interim titles and prolonged suspensions, MMA has to be at least argued as the purest sport in the world. It regularly showcases its potential to surprise, satisfy and hunger its followers. The training, dedication, hard work and sacrifice that enters being a professional MMA boxer is past our comprehension. The rivalry can be seen as an intercontinental, my nation vs. yours all-out battle. Whether it's a heel kick to the face or an elbow off the octagon. It's a five-round, ground-and-pound fighting royal. It's fighting, the the most natural recreation recognized to man.

5. Levelheaded Deals

MMA deals are often quick. This gives the sport's numerous promotions the possibility to pay its fighters the cash they ought to get, or don't. For example, a lot of UFC agreements are built around a six-fight duration. This gives ownership the potential to regulate its assets and not have caught paying fighters scads of dollars after they're no longer able to execute. Unlike MMA, other recreations like softball, football and basketball are continually subjected to "secured" contracts. Lengthy deals that are commonly 8 or 10 years long make these sports laughable. Sportsmen aren't going to perform in their prime for a years long. It's common sense. I suspect MMA is the only recreation to recognize it has to protect its cash as well as take each deal step by step.

6. Competitive Salary

Overall, an MMA salary is extremely competitive. For MMA fighters, gaining a $ 10,000 paycheck could be the determining factor in paying their rent on time or not. They do not have room for mistake. Sure, the occasional PPV cash cow like Brock Lesnar will certainly enjoy more perks than the rest, but at the end of the day, MMA is among the most financially reasonable sports around. Additional entities like softball, football as well as basketball function insanely rich participants, some making millions and millions a year! They can't relax and ride an assured income in to the sundown. They are obliged to give 100% percent, ONE HUNDRED percent of the time, every minute they're inside the octagon. It's exactly what makes the sport much more hazardous, which in turn creates more enjoyment as well as interest for fans.

7. No Scandals

MMA doesn't tolerate rubbish. Fighting is fighting, as well as it begins and also keeps with that. The sport isn't constructed to function around corruption. The recreation does not appear to run into major scandals, due in part to MMA's stability wall being iron-clad. Boxers aren't throwing fights, managers aren't taking online video tapes of training camps, coaches aren't being caught seducing kids. Up until now in its quick existence, MMA has actually been as clean as a sport can be, minus failed testosterone tests. However nowadays, exactly what recreation does not have its complications with performance-enhancing?

8. Limited Injuries

Of course, the periodic injury bug strikes training camps and also places some of the greatest fighters on the shelf for a few months, however absolutely nothing close to the ACL tears and also Tommy Mark surgeries that comprise every various other sport. Despite being the bloodiest sport on the world, fighters are hardly ever seriously injured inside the cage. Whether it's getting removed off the football field after a helmet-to-helmet accident or cracking an ankle after moving into home plate, other sports are sometimes more unsafe compared to fighting. Clearly a few fighters possess the capacity to break bones, like Frank Mir as well as Ronda Rousey, but for one of the most components, matches are put to a halt before debilitating injuries are suffered.

9. Restricted Concussions

Having a better chance of getting struck by lightning than experiencing a concussion in the course of a battle, Mixed martial arts fighters are very surprisingly lucky in that sense. It simply doesn't happen that often. Decisive fights are 99.9 percent of the time stopped at the best second, with the occasional inexperienced referee slipping up for a brief few seconds. Unlike MMA, additional recreations appear to incorporate a whole lot of concussion-related instances-- others especially, the NFL as well as NHL. When your sport sees a participant get concussed at least once a week, it might be time to reposition some points about. For fighters, bruised chins as well as forehead lacerations are the biggest risks.

What do you think?

MMA banned in Thailand

Muay Thai - Illustration from Flickr.com
Really, MMA banned in Thailand? It definitely appears to be the case, somethings which appears kind of odd in a country where the hard hitting fighters of Muay Thai are national heroes and the martial art - considered brutal by many - is the national sport.

Apparently mixed martial arts has been deemed to be 'too brutal' by the governing Thai sports authorities.

Makes me wonder if there isn't some form of political pressure behind this decision.

MMA banned in Thailand

Here's a small excerpt of what bangkokpost.com has to say about this kind of strange move.
SAT officials met this week to discuss whether holding an MMA event was lawful or not following a request from a private company and they finally agreed that under the 1999 boxing law, it is unlawful to stage an MMA event in Thailand.
"Organising a MMA event here would hurt the image of Muay Thai," Sakol said.
There have been two MMA events held in Bangkok and neither were approved by the SAT, according to Sakol. He said the SAT was asking the Interior Ministry's legal advisors to consider action against any MMA organisers.
"If you want to do this kind of business, you should do it in another country," Sakol said. "Organising MMA here could mislead the public into believing that Muay Thai is brutal."
So there you have it - apparently MMA is too brutal, but Muay Thai is OK. Weird logic if you ask me. What's your opinion?

Judo worries parents

Japan -- From 2012, martial arts such as judo will be compulsory in schools across the country, according to english.aljazeera.net.

The program will help preserve the country's national sport of judo according to Japanese government officials, and for people who love all martial arts like we do, it comes as an apparently great decision.

However, many Japanese parents and also experts are voicing their concern - something which is understandable from the following numbers.

It is shown that 114 students have died (it is even said at least that number) and another 261 have been seriously injured while practicing the sport in school over the last 30 years, a number which is claimed to be five times higher than those shown in other large sports.

Is judo a dangerous sport? Of course not. Under safe guidance and qualified instruction it is way less dangerous than most other sports. If you take a country like France, where judo is a huge sport, there has been no reported deaths among children practicing the sport.

The point here is rather that you have no safety instructions in the Japanese school judo as well as non qualified, highly inexperienced teachers/instructors. Some of them apparently have been given just a basic three days of training before being set to teach children judo.

Combine that with a (Japanese judo) sports culture that is said to celebrate toughness, and you may have yourself an unfortunate road to more serious incidents.

Confuse-Us speaks #24

OK ninjabbers ... time for an other complete martial arts comment fail, something master Confuse-Us would be proud of; nay, scrap that, he would probably be sobbing silently.

Today's entry: "The judo kick"... Yes, you got that right. We all know about the famous (and totally lethal) judo chop. But a judo kick? I guess that's more like "toetally" lethal?

Anyhow, apparently gullible reporters from gacksports.com talks about the first time ever judo kick. Allegedly delivered during a soccer match in Brazil. Sure, we know that the sport of soccer is a full contact blood sport and all that, but a judo kick...? Quadruple wow!

In all fairness, the fantasy land reporters states: "It's not often that you see someone judo-kick someone in the back of the head". Spot on guys, spot on. Could it be because judo don't involve kicking? Just saying...

Fee "hike-ido"

Australia -- Following a fee increase imposed on Melbourne University sports clubs, the kung fu club has reportedly accused the campus sports association of racism and lodged a complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission, according to watoday.com.au.

The University Sport claim the increase it was unavoidable due to a revenue shortfall caused by a government ban on collecting union fees from students.

Kung Fu Club students says the clubs most affected are international students - predominantly Asian - who are being shut out of campus sports following the fee hike.

According to policies, a club which is not competing must pay a per-hour room hire fee. On the other hand, free training space is provided free to the clubs which are preparing for competition.

The complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission allegedly includes a support statement from other campus martial arts units, including the aikido and karate clubs.
