Salma Arastu - Indian Muslim Artist | Arabic Calligraphy | spiritual mixed media paintings | sculptures (james s)

Salma Arastu is blessed with a fluent and lyrical visual language. She is a diverse and solid multicultural humanist. As a woman, Hindu and Muslim, her work reflects, as well as transcends, all barriers with compassion and creative elegance.

- Professor Ricardo Viera,

Director / Curator, Lehigh University Art Galleries / Museum Operation Bethlehem, PA, August 2008

If these paintings attain their liveliness through a rubbing together of opposites at a conceptual level, a potent dynamism also operates within each composition in Arastu's painterly style.Broad areas of wash are given counterpoint by devotion to fine, rhythmic detail which is more than embroidery. It is the mark of Arastu's personal absorption of the stories she recasts.

-- William Zimmer

Art Critic, New York Times New York City, February 1994

In her work, the bodies are blended together. It isn't clear where one begins and one ends. Often all the figures are drawn with the same line. They are deliberately created as a whole, as a group, as an ensemble. The world Salma Arastu is helping us create is one in which the magic of communion plays a central role. Her subjects include people who, whatever they do, they do together. They initiate each other, they celebrate together, they grieve together, they pray together.

-- Pana Columbus

Producing Artistic Director, Circle of Stones Ritual Theater Ensemble Emmaus, PA, September 2004

The passion of love and inner peace is what inspires her to create exceptional works that speak to the spirit of humanity in all of us.

-- Ranjeet Pawar

Art Director, Monsoon Galleries Bethlehem, PA, January 2006

It is interesting, however, that the most recent work, structured to explore the contemporary artistic idiom, clearly displays elements encoded in the style of Indian miniatures. And indeed the works which recall this tradition are among the artist's strongest pieces. The blending of traditional and contemporary imagery shows the artist striving for a unique personal expression. Visual elements from numerous cultures, traditional and modern, Eastern and Western, are her tools.

-- Excerpt from a short essay, "Salma Arastu, Traditional and Contemporary Imagery," by Charlotta Kotik, Curator of Contemporary Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art. This essay introduced the paintings by Ms. Arastu, in a solo exhibition at the Art Heritage Gallery, in New Delhi, India in March 1998.

Ms. Arastu believes in the ultimate victory of human dignity and in the continuity of human cycles. The impenetrable forms that arise from the amassing of the figures speak to this end and act as a beacon renewing the desire of humans for independence and determination.

Mixed Martial Arts- Its Origin and Its Evolution

Olympics of Ancient Greece has been the cradle of many boxing kind of sports and body exercises that are enjoyed till date. Mixed martial arts, a type of full hand-to-hand combat sports has been born and nurtured in this ancient city of the world. The original version of it was dubbed as pankration (where the words pan and crates translate to 'all powers' in Greece). This game was highly popular and it followed a fair play, where any kind of biting and eye gouging was strictly prohibited. The popularity catapulted the winners to the status of heroes and legends.

Prankration was not confined to the boundary of Greece. It went far and subsequently evolved into different martial art forms, which people are aware about (rather more conversant). It was Alexander the Great who sowed the seeds of interest of this game further across the world, especially in India. He based it as the method of selection while recruiting soldiers for his army. This sport served a good yardstick of physical strength and prowess for him.

This martial art travelled from one corner of the world to the other. Besides Alexander, it was also the initiative of Buddhist monks who spread the knowledge to China, eventually giving birth to several formats of martial arts like judo, karate and kung fu. Further on, a judo expert carried the knowledge to Brazil and thus was born the Brazilian art of Jiu-Jitsu.

Mixed martial art is a kind of sports which gives not only the pleasure of a fight, but also helps fighters stay active in body and mind. Such kind of body exercise allows the use of variety of techniques called striking and grappling. At Legends Mixed Martial Arts studio, you can learn this and all the other technicalities of the game. The expert trainers at the studio believe that it is not about becoming a pro fighter, but there can be myriad other reasons to learn the same, such as learning self-defense, losing weight and staying fit and fine.

Adults and kids can enroll at Legends MMA and join the classes, which are scheduled as per flexible timing. By making strong focus on stamina and expert moves, every effort is made to bring out the best talent of the trainee. The kickboxing programs are designed to bring out energy and agility. Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu training are also offered. The ultimate aim is to work out on a full body workout.

Why do only boxing or judo, when you can do both? Introducing, Mixed Martial Arts! (Hana Reed)

Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA as it is commonly abbreviated to, is a combat sport that allows techniques to be used from various other combat sports. Components of Mixed Martial Arts are taken from sports such as boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, karate and judo.

It is a sport where physical force between the players is well within the rules of the game, and as such appropriate MMA clothing needs to be worn by the players.

The only MMA clothes for men are shorts as this sport requires its male fighters to be bare-chested. Any other items of clothing could potentially hinder or aid particular moves, therefore attire is minimal. MMA clothes for female fighters are shorts and sports bras.

Other MMA gear includes items such as groin guards for male fighters, and gloves and mouthguards for both male and female fighters. Quality MMA gear in the UK can be purchased from various sources; shop MMA clothing from your local high street sports shop, or online stores.

MMA clothing for amateur fighters however, differs slightly. Amateurs, in addition to shorts and gloves, are required to wear knee pads and head guards.

Although the techniques used in Mixed Martial Arts were practiced in various countries across the globe as far back as the early Olympics, its modern embodiment was established only in the 20th century. The United Kingdom is a member of The International Mixed Martial Arts Federation, which determines an international structure of the game. However, only 19 countries are a member of the Federation, so therefore, the rules of Mixed Martial Arts differ somewhat from country to country. There is also a different set of rules for female fighters.

The techniques used in Mixed Martial Arts fall into two groups, striking techniques and grappling techniques, both standing up and on the ground. Fighters need to be proficient in both areas in order to be competent in the sport. Players are permitted to punch, kick, elbow, submission hold, choke, take-down, etc. their opponents and as such, the chances of injury are high. Despite this, the injury rates of Mixed Martial Arts are on par with those of other combat sports and the number of documented deaths are quite low.

Mixed Martial Arts is a very popular and fast-growing sport. This is due to the fact that players who are trained in even one combat sport can take part due to the flexible nature of this sport, making this a sport for anyone and everyone.

The Difference Between Mixed Martial Arts and Aikido

Mixed Martial Arts is all over the TV, Aikido...is not. But, what is the difference here? All hype and excitement aside, what is the difference between these two martial arts?
First, Mixed martial arts, such as you see on the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Strikeforce and other such programs, is a contest. A man beating a man. Thus, it is not an art.
Now don't get your panties in a bunch, it doesn't mean MMA is bad, I never said that. But the difference between an art and a sport is that in a sport man tries to beat man. In an art a man tries to control himself.
Mind you, this splits a few hairs.
Tell me it doesn't take a degree of self control to enact a strategy in the middle of a fight and I'll call you a fool.
It takes immense self control to bide your time, play the game, and spring a trap.
However, the real difference here has to do with the type and degree of control.
In Mixed Martial Arts one uses muscles and forceful leverage. It takes real bulldogging skills to take a fighter down when he is bent on taking you down. This is a real fight.
In Aikido, however, one is anticipating the strike, planning on the direction and speed of the strike, and then blending with the strike. Manipulating not by bull dogging, but by harmonizing. Joining with a person, instead of pounding him into a pulp or snapping off his limbs.
Do you see the difference here?
Not forceful leverage, but flowing manipulation. This is a fight of a different kind, and it takes immense...self control to control somebody using this method.
But MMA, as indicated above, is a sport, and Aikido is the art, and the two shoujldn't be compared because they are simply not in the same arena.
The real problem here, in addition to the type of control needed, is that people insist that Aikido is not a real martial art.
It is a real martial art. It is derived from Daito Ryu Aiki jujitsu and swordsmanship, in which fighters didn't just fight for the gold and the glory, but for their very lives.
And, the thing that most people don't know, is that with just a few twists and alterations to the techniques, one could take it into the MMA arena.
That, however, wouldn't be in keeping with the art, and would change it into something else.
This has been a page concerning Mixed Martial Arts and Aikido.

How Mixed Martial Arts Can Help Improve Your Life

You may only know mixed martial arts from what you have seen on pay per view. But did you know that mixed marital arts is something you can take on to improve your own life, even if you will never be pay per view material? Here are some ways that mixed martial arts, also known as MMA, can potentially improve your life.

Physical health

Mixed martial arts is a great way to build up your physical health, and improve your athleticism. Here is what FearlessFighting.com has to say about what MMA can do for you: "MMA presents a stimulating full body workout and a scope of demand that incorporates every energy system in the body to a degree matched by few other sports in the world." The article says that "the speed, power, and strength components of MMA engage both the body's anaerobic energy system as well as its aerobic energy system on multiple levels" and that this "type of intensity simultaneously improves musculature as well as cardiovascular endurance and overall capacity."

From kickboxing to Brazilian and New York jiu jitsu to karate to muay thai, you can increase your flexibility, build up your strength, gain stamina, and become a better all around athlete.

Self-confidence and discipline

One of the things you may learn when it comes to mixed martial arts is gaining increased self-confidence. As you learn under the tutelage of an MMA expert at increasing your skills, you may feel more confident in what you can do. The skills you learn are not mindless things, like trudging on a treadmill while watching Judge Judy. Instead, you will have to think, as well as learn. This requires real discipline. Showing the discipline, and the patience, will also help increase your self-confidence. As little as one or two classes a week in one or more of the MMA skills can not just make you more skilled an athlete, but it can help you feel more confident in your life.

Self-defense techniques

You may think that learning mixed martial arts can potentially protect you if you are in a dangerous situation. That could be true. There are a variety of skills that you can learn in self-defense via New York jiu-jitsu or other techniques that can help you immobilize a predator, or simply to stun him or her so you can run away.

In all, learning MMA can have great benefits for you.

Clouds of Mixed Martial Arts Bouts Raining in Dubai

Dubai, being one of the world's topmost corporate havens, is seeking to cash in on the growing popularity of mixed martial arts in the Emirates. Only recently, the Dubai World Trade Center anchored the world's biggest Global Fight Championship with a total of 11 fights, including both of men's and women's. Now in May, the stage is all set for holding yet another heated mega thrilling event of mixed martial arts in Dubai.

The martial arts world is so abuzz with the onset of the fight events in Dubai that almost all the top ranking mixed martial arts fighters and champions are landing in Dubai for enthralling the Emirates spectators with their outclass fighting skills.

Attitude towards mixed martial arts Dubai

Mixed martial arts Dubai is bringing in money and exposure of the best on the national and the international fight scene. While the organizers and players get to cash in on money and fame through the full house tournament, the public bargains their cash for an entertaining time, aloof from the bustle of normal hectic life.

The budding Emirati athletes are thrilled to get so much exposure and opportunities on home ground. The fighters of mixed martial arts pounce at each other exercising their mixed martial art forms, mastering the moves which an inexperienced adversary may often find difficult to apprehend beforehand.

Government support for Mixed Martial Arts Dubai

The good news for mixed martial arts fans is that the UAE officials have been openly manifesting a government interest in promoting the MMA on every level and have pledged their full support to the clubs and gyms in Dubai for training their athletes. So for those who love Dubai for its fashion, updated shopping malls, grand hotels, enticing club nights and alluring beaches, they can really hope to find in action the best of mixed martial arts fighters live in the ring.

Whom does it appeal to the most?

The popularity of mixed martial arts owes in great deal to the fact that it's rooted in various fight forms popular throughout the various regions of the world for over centuries. Not only do the expatriates enroll themselves for training under master fighters, the local youth is equally entranced by its popular appeal. After all, who can resist a game which so fuses the most lethal and elusive fight moves?
