How to Discover The Fighting Method Used by The Shaolin Monks!

That the Shaolin Monks have their own method for fighting is pretty obvious. The problem is that nobody knows what it is. The good news is that it is pretty easy to figure out this secret.

There is a film in which a camera crew goes to the Shaolin Temple. This is a documentary, with the usual things to see and do type of script, but with one very interesting, little occurrence. The happening is that a mixed martial arts fellow is seen climbing steps to one of the temples.

There is a hard smile on his face, and he claims that he is on his way to find out if the monks of shaolin know how to fight for real. Some time later, he is seen returning...and it is obvious that he has just been kicked on his mixed martial beautocks.

If one searches through youtube for any length of time, they will come across a boxing contest between a fighter (taekwondo or karate or some other art) and a monk of the shaolin temple. During the contest, the monk negligently slaps aside the boxer's strikes aside, then begins his own gorgeous onslaught. What is interesting is that it is obvious that the monk doesn't really want to hurt his opponent; he is just freestyling for the heck of it, there is no real desire to harm manifested.

If one examines the history of early karate in Okinawa, there is much mention of training with temple monks in the fuchien province of China. The specific training method resulted in the art of Uechi Ryu Karate (called Pan Gai Noon), and there is some evidence that the art was grown from Bak Mei Kung Fu. This is a direct connection between two important fighting arts.

If one examines the art of Uechi, and that of Bak Mei (White Eyebrow Kung Fu), there are a lot of simple slaps. The specific method is either slaps with the palm or beaks with the backs of the wrist, and in both up and down and sideways directions. If one analyzes these slaps, an entire fighting method can be figured out pretty easily.

Indeed, if one looks at fighting in general, the basic parry is nothing more than a slap. This is a method which could easily be trained in. Simply set up two bags a couple of feet apart and practice striking them with wrist and palm; this actually closely resembles basic iron palm training from the ancient methods of kung fu.

In conclusion, there is much conjecture offered in this article, but there is also a hard core line of reasoning. Could true temple methods of fighting rely on something as simple as the palm and beak? This writer would suggest that any interested reader could simply raise the question, by raising his fists in challenge, to any Shaolin Monk he might come across in his travels.

Ninja, from Scottland

Enjoy this new cartoon about the "Scottish Ninjas". These fellows are absolutely not apposed to a bit of something strong to drink ... and a few chosen swear words.

Along with lots of fighting, anger, quarrels and general mayhem - I'd say this is bound to be a success :-)

No Olympic MMA

No Olympic MMA - From Flickr.com
Whether you find it OK/fine, or you really get mad at the idea, here's the thing: There will be no Olympic MMA - or Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) for that matter.

Let me rephrase that a little bit before the hard-core mixed martial arts fans gets a full-blown seizure ... these sports will not be included in any foreseeable future.

Sure, the current fighting arts in the Olympic games are about as exiting to watch as drying paint - in other words extremely boring unless you're into that particular art/sport.

And sure enough, MMA is - whether we like it or not - a massive force to be reckoned with on the combat sports arena. It's action packed and intriguing in ways that say taekwondo or judo can never be.

Still, the chances that MMA - or other sports like BJJ - will be a part of the Olympic family any time soon is close to zero.

And no, I'm not the one saying so. I love BJJ (been doing it myself for some time) and I can't see why a modified version of MMA shouldn't be made to fit the Olympic program. There are others - people with more knowledge than me who says so.

Read more about it here.

Confuse-Us speaks #26

BJJ - Illustration from Flickr.com
Before we go on to the subject of being confused - I'd like to remind you all about the new Martial Arts News site. Check it out!

The site/blog you're on right now will definitely be updated from time to time, but not as regularly as before. The main attention is going to be on the new site as far as martial arts news stuff is concerned.

Any way, lets bring master Confuse-Us on...

Silly me, I thought BJJ was a part of mixed martial arts/MMA, but hey, what do I know... At least this online article apparently states otherwise.
Chef Marc Vetri likes to fight. "As a chef you have to have an outlet to let off some steam," he says. Nearly two years ago, Mr. Vetri took up Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a mixed-martial art that focuses on ground fighting and self-defense.
"Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a mixed-martial art"... Okay... We all learn something as we go along I guess.

Any feedback and comments - positive or negative - is highly appreciated.

Upwards and inwards... Apparently a MMA ref lost his cool when a cornerman got angry about his fighter losing an amateur bout in

Here's what offthebench.nbcsports.com has to say about the incident - do remember to check out the whole piece.
The rise of Mixed Martial Arts fighting across this fair nation has spurned the creation of many smaller MMA events that pit rogue fighters against each other. These matches resemble more along the lines of street fights than MMA matches but occasionally you see something that makes the fight worth the watch. Check out this MMA referee trying to calm down this corner man after a knockout of his fighter at a small event in Texas.

And here's a video of the knockdown:

MMA fights at home

Fighting - Illustration from Flickr.com
It appears that some folks have decided to take things a step further (and way too far) by staging MMA fights at home.

Yup, there are apparently combat arts fans who perhaps sees mixed martial arts fights as a great way to get some action right there in their living room.

Here's an excerpt of what marconews.com reports about privately held MMA matches in Florida.

MMA fights at home

A Lee County family is accused of hosting unlicensed fights.Lee County Sheriff's deputies arrested Angela Harrison, 36, Brandon Harrison, 27, and Gauge Ford, 17, for staging Mixed Martial Arts style fights on the 1400 block of Hightower Avenue South in Lehigh Acres.Lee County detectives were able to confirm allegations of illegal fights by finding Facebook videos capturing juveniles and young adults engaging in full contact fighting. Detectives with the help of a school resource officer at East Lee County High School were able to identify some of the people in the videos.
Perhaps the family thought this would be a good way to make a few extra bucks. In any case, not the smartest martial arts move to pull off.

Cage fight and children?

Dailymail.co.uk and other ill informed British newspapers have been all over a "shocking" revelation of children doing "cage fighting" recently.

All though there are some things that were not good decisions about the two young lads fighting, one really has to wonder if the sensation seeking press has totally lost their collective marble...

Yes, the fight was held inside a one of the cages used for cage fighting, and yes it was during an MMA event. But had the half-wits of the press done any basic research they would have discovered that A. this was not an MMA fight, and B. not a "cage fight".

In fact it was nothing worse than a regular wrestling, grappling, judo or BJJ (Brazilian jiu-jitsu) match - something children all over the world are doing with great success day in and day out.

Yes, the setting and arrangement around this "cage match" should definitely not been handled the way it turned out. But one should also hope that the nitwit press representatives and the sensation seekers (some of which probably want children to wear a helmet indoors to avoid being hurt - poor things...) could refrain from talking about things of which they have absolutely no frigging clue what so ever.

Am I a great fan of young children fighting? Nope. How about MMA? I do find some parts of that questionable as well. Still I do find passages like the ones below (from said newspaper) very offensive and totally laughable really:

"The spectacle of grown men punching the life out of each other in public was stomach-churning enough. But the behaviour of the crowd as two young schoolboys were led into the cage set up in the centre of the dingy room, was sickening to the extreme."

"As the boys began to pummel each other into submission, the baying chants of the 450 adults could be heard in the streets beyond."

For your information - this was a grappling match - no punches or kicks to be seen anywhere...

"Footage of that awful fight, which had all the aggressive hallmarks of a backstreet brawl, provoked a wave of outrage this week when it surfaced on the internet."

"(...)But the British Medical Association (BMA), the NSPCC and the charity Safechild have all reacted with fury, branding the spectacle 'disturbing and sick'. They are calling for a police and social services investigation. Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt has also condemned the 'sport' as 'barbaric'."

Let's hear it - what's your take on these ill-informed representatives and sensation seekers of the press? Are there any hopes of educating reporters about what martial arts is about, and finally - what's your take on MMA fights and children fighting in particular?

Feel free to comment below.

Oh bloody... nose!

UK -- Well-known British MMA fighter Alex Reid - Katie Price's former hubby - was forced to use some quick self-defense moves when he was assaulted without any form of warning recently. Mr Reid reportedly ended up with a seriously bloodied nose, though.

The fighter and Celebrity Big Brothers winner was reportedly walking past a church and minding his own business in south-west London on Friday afternoon, when out of the blue a thug punched him straight in the face.

Witnesses said the victim's extensive training for cage fighting soon kicked in and that it wasn't long before he got the better of his attacker, according to unrealitytv.co.uk.

You have to give the guy credit for not beating the living daylight out of the cowardly thug. It is said he just give him a few punches to the chest along with a thorough (and apparently more than well deserved) verbal bashing.

An amazing recovery

Arizona -- When Darla Loy, 28 at the time, was diagnosed with 'Mixed Connective Tissue Disease' (MCTD), an autoimmune disorders akin to Lupus, her doctor told her that she needed to take pain medication, anti-inflammatories and steroids - probably for the rest of her life.

The reply from the woman was simply that it was not going to happen, according to sandspringsleader.com.

Rather, the determined woman started her own research and began fighting back - eventually taking up karate at the same place her young son was a student.

Her determination, changes in diet and karate workouts soon helped her begin to lose weight and she found her confidence was restored. She was indeed able to do without the medications to the amazement of her doctor.

After getting a passion for karate, she advanced to aerobic style kick-boxing, before finally going into the ring as a full-fledged kick-boxer.

I urge you to read this truly inspirational story about  a woman with a remarkable fighting spirit.

Money laundering

Oregon -- West Linn resident and MMA fighter Chael Sonnen has been known for a number of things - a real estate business (he's a licensed Realtor), his UFC fighting career, his aggressive, flamboyant and some times quite entertaining Twitter tweets, suspected drug use, and also for being a Republican with what appeared to be political ambitions.

Now, the outspoken MMA fighter has added another "achievement" to his name, the criminal activity of money laundering.

According to westlinntidings.com, Sonnen recently admitted that a financial transaction he conducted was designed to conceal control of the proceeds when a title company paid a plumbing company for repairs, even though he knew repairs wouldn't be completed. The plumbing company was paid and gave the homebuyer most of it, and Sonnen made commission off the faulty real estate transaction.

"Marital arts" fighting

China -- While the majority "marital arts" fighting begin after the knots have been tied, this doesn't always seem to be the case.

Two Chinese kung fu sisters, Xiao Lin and her sister Yin (penned as experts, of course) claim they will not get married until their suitors has proven worthy by beating them in combat, according to metro.co.uk.

It is evidently an option to choose between open-hand combat or any weapon the suitors may wish. However the sisters say they won't be holding back. "If they can't beat us, they aren't worthy," 22-year-old Lin says.

A three-day "fighting festival" will allegedly be held in Foushan. The sisters will be masked throughout the challenges, so the men must risk life and limb without even knowing what their potential brides-to-be look like.
Let me see if I get this right...

First you risk getting your furry behind whooped royally. Then, if you win, you may claim your prize without really knowing what it looks like? What if the sisters here end up being butt ugly? Will a "Thank's but no thank's" or running for cover lead to a violent rematch of sort?

I guess I'll be more than happy to pass on this one :-)

Toe-kwon-do

This may look like a lot like taekwondo, but it's not. This is the slightly less known yet equally impressive toekwondo. Nice face block, by the way...
