Why Should I Learn Karate?

Are you thinking of learning karate? Well, I applaud you. If you're still unsure about whether or not karate classes would be good for you, then keep reading. I'm going to go over a few of the different benefits that surround learning a martial art. By the end of the article you should have a good idea of whether or not karate is something you might enjoy learning.

Karate is a great way to get in shape. It's a very physical sport that forces you to push your body to the max. If you're regularly attending karate classes, then you'll start losing weight pretty quickly. The workouts are great cardio, but there is also a good bit of strength training involved in it. After all, a martial art isn't much good if you don't have the strength to do anything with it!

Karate doesn't just push your body to its limit either. It also pushes your mind to its limits. A good karate school will train your mind as well as your body. You'll improve your discipline, your reaction speeds, and your memory. These are all important parts of any traditional fighting art. Once again, karate is useless if you don't have the mental capacity to use it properly.

But karate isn't all work either. It's a lot of fun and very rewarding. The ranking system within the school gives you something to work toward. And you'll feel amazing after you pass your belt tests. Almost nothing is better than the feeling of satisfaction that your months and years of work has paid off. Along with belt testing within the school, many martial arts schools opt to participate in inter-school tournaments. If you think belt testing was satisfying, then wait until you beat out a dozen other students in a regional or national martial arts tournament!

You'll also make a ton of friends when you study karate. People from all walks of life with all sorts of different interests opt to take martial arts lessons for different reasons. But in the end, you'll all have at least one thing in common - you enjoy learning martial arts. The people you'll meet in your classes can easily go on to become some of your best friends in the world. It'll be nice knowing that someone is always there for you when you need them, and your classmates will often fill that spot. Karate schools often become families pretty quickly.

Plus, there's the practical reason for learning martial arts - self-defense. Whether you're a five foot tall woman or a six foot tall man, learning to defend yourself is always important. A good school will teach you everything from hand to hand combat to knife and gun disarmament. Basically anything you'd need to protect yourself and your family.

Karate is a great hobby to take up. There are so many benefits that surround this simple sport. If you're considering karate, I highly recommend you check out one or two local schools and see if it really is something you're interested in.

It is becoming increasingly common to see children dressed for battle with their white gis and multi-colored belts. It's obviously good exercise and children of all ages love it, especially boys. Even if your boys aren't studying any martial arts, they're faking it.

Three Reasons Why Karate Kata are the Secret to the Universe

There are several reasons why Karate Kata are so valuable to the martial artist. Mind you, we are including many forms of Martial Arts, kung fu patterns, taekwondo forms, whatever.

The first reason Karate Kata are so good for you is purely physical. Simply, if you are doing a form, you are doing bodyweight calisthenics. Many people overlook this, but when you do the first form of Karate, Heian One, or Pinan One as it is sometimes referred to, you are doing approximately 20 squats on the front leg. If you do all five of these karate kata you are doing over 100 knee bends, and these calisthenics shape and power the legs in a multitude of ways. Simply, the leg is completely and fully powered up.

The second reason Karate Kata are so great for you is that they teach you control.
This starts with control of the body. You learn how to hold your body in a particular position in space, how to move to another position in space through the quickest and most efficient manner possible.
This fact of control progresses into technique, and here is where kata really shine. When you are doing a technique you are learning to take charge of another person's body. You control it no matter how violent it is, and you learn to handle it without using effort.

Mind you, there are more efficient ways of learning fighting. You could punch a bag as in boxing for hours and hours, and not learn anything new about yourself body. And, to tell the truth, this author finds that method slightly boring.

So Karate Kata might take a bit longer to learn, but you are not learning to just destroy, you are learning to control, both your own body and somebody else's body. Very valuable stuff. And that brings us to the third reason martial arts forms are good for you.

To control the body takes concentration, and thus you are learning to take charge of your mind.
Did you know that people who learn real karate, or real kung fu, usually do better in life? That is because they have learned not to just to control bodies, but awareness. They have learned to control thought.

And a person who can control thought can control the universe. Thus, the importance of martial arts forms, karate katas, or whatever you call them, cannot be underestimated.

What Went Wrong With Karate

I say Karate, but that includes Kung Fu, Taekwondo, Kenpo, or whatever. I am speaking of the martial arts on the whole.

To understand what has happened to the Martial Arts one needs to understand what has happened to them first.

What has happened is the broad institutionalization of mankind. Sounds big, but it means that instead of going to school to become more aware, one goes to school to learn how to get along, and to memorize a bunch of tricks so that he can work for somebody else.

Not much of a future, eh?

But it's true...people in school are not taught how to start a business, but how to work for somebody else.

Now, in the martial arts there is a difference, and this difference is Awareness. In the martial arts one is taught how to actually be Aware, how to solve the problems of the universe no matter how frantic they become, to keep a cool head and prevail.

The problem, unfortunately, is that the martial arts have become tainted. People learn them so they can beat somebody up, or win a trophy, or get a belt. And, underlying this corruption, is the simple laziness that modern schooling imparts.

I remember one class I was teaching, and one fellow suddenly walked out of the class, right out of the forms and sweat and bruises and everything, and got himself a glass of water.

"What did you just do?" I asked, amazed.

"I was thirsty," the fellow said.

"So you're going to stop a fight, right in the middle of being punched, and get a glass of water?"

"But I can get a glass of water when I get thirsty in school," the dull one explained, as if I was the dull one.

He didn't understand, and the time for words was long passed. This was a lesson he should have learned lo-o-ong ago. This was a lesson his parents should have been spanked for for not teaching him.

"Line up," I commanded the class. And, to the dull one, "We are going to freestyle you, one by one, until you are thirsty and can't breath and are exhausted and just want to quit. And if you manage not to quit, I'll let you stay in class."

Needless to say, the dull fellow became a wide-eyed fellow, and in the best sense of the word. Simply, he learned that the martial arts aren't a class, they are a method to survival, and only if you are willing to put aside your designer water and engage in real combat, are you going to become a living, breathing, more aware person.

Stop being a work a day fool and become Aware. Go to MonsterMartialArts.com and learn the most efficient methods for gaining Awareness through the martial Arts in the world. Karate or Tai Chi chuan or whatever martial art you prefer, you can undo the institutionalized education you have been tainted with.

Hair saloon karate moves

As this piece correctly states, it does take a man who is comfortable to perform select karate moves - dressed skintight jeans, snakeskin boots, a barbers robe and tinfoil (!).

However, this is exactly the scene in the liquor (Southern Comfort) ad shown below. The leading man, who is said to operate martial arts (karate) schools in real life, is showing the ladies some slick moves - great fun! :-)

The Hardest Karate Kicks You Ever Launch!

Out of all the great Martial Art kickers I have known, and this includes all my practice in Karate, Taekwondo and Kenpo, Bob was the best. This was back a ways, almost fifty years ago now, and training methods were just being introduced to this country. And the things we did, when we practiced martial arts, were often extreme, to say the least.

We didn't always have hanging bags, so we would kick treetrunks and telephone poles and whatever else we happened to see. The critical aspect to this, however, was to have good form, and the sheer number of times you launched a foot in training. I speak honestly when I say that how much you practiced was the real key.

Bob was known for throwing lots of kicks. Most of the budding kenpoka would throw a dozen kicks each side, not all the kicks, and consider that they were breaking a sweat, so they must have really worked out. Do you understand?

Bob would saunter into the dojo a couple of hours before class and begin work. He would start with yoga, do a full regimen of stretching, and then he would start his work out. Two hundred kicks for each side for each particular kick.

I know, you're maybe thinking that they were only airkicks, right? Not a chance. He would start with pounding the the air, then he would go to the bag, and by the end of his workout (almost ready for regular class) he was really bouncing those bozos to the ceiling.

Most important was his attention to detail. He was obsessed with his hips being just right, the arc of his foot being perfect, and the shape of his foot upon impact. He was a perfectionist, to say the least.

One evening he was on his way home, pulled up behind somebody sleeping at an intersection, and he tapped his horn. This huge bully opened his car door, got out, and walked back towards Bob. Bob quickly got out of his car, uplifted his palms for peace (also a martial arts ready position), and protested that he didn't want to fight.

The monster brute drew back a massive fist. Bob popped him in the chest with a wheel kick. The fellow sat down and looked about in surprise.

"I don't want to fight, man!" But the thug stood up and rushed towards Bob. Bob executed a full hipped, ball of foot wheel kick to the chest.

The fellow collapsed to the ground, and Bob got into his Ford and drove off. And the message here is pretty easy to get. No matter which art you do, Karate, Kenpo or Taekwondo or whatever, pay attention to detail, and practice like you mean it.

Whether you study Shotokan, Kenpo or Taekwondo, you know the key to success is often in the martial arts training method. Here's a great page if you want to learn how to punch or kick harder than the other guy!

Confuse-Us speaks #28

Brown belt - by conskeptical, Flickr.com
According to our friends the gullible media nitwits (aka reporters), a karate brown belt is now the same as being an expert.

Oh yes, jolly old great-grandmaster Confuse-Us is totally on the ball with his one.

I don't even dare to think what this guy would have been called, had he been a black belt.

I am positive the man himself didn't mention anything about expert status, or any other status for that matter. Your typical reporter will fill in the blanks quite nicely and make it all oh so sensational.

In any case, here's the piece of Confuse-Us approved shenanigans with the title: "Get me out of here...I'm a karate expert." Simply brilliant!
A brown belt in karate kept his cool after ending up locked inside Maldon’s leisure centre.
When ceramic tiler Dave Collins’ late evening karate class ended Tuesday night, he had a quick shower before realising he was locked in at the Blackwater Leisure Centre.
So now you know, becoming a karate expert is just a stroll in the park, you don't even need one of them deadly black belts!

The karate guard

No, it's probably not the kind of karate guard you're thinking about - it's an excellent cartoon by none other than Tom and Jerry, a classic.

I've never seen this one before, and these guys always make me laugh - good stuff! Those two knows how to throw a good fight, that's for sure!

Confuse-Us speaks #27

A yes... our very own old Grandmaster of martial arts weirdness, Confuse-Us, is back with another edition of stage diving into the mixed-up world of martial arts lunacy!
Confucius - Illustration image from fotopedia.com/Google
This time he's found a piece from timesofindia.indiatimes.com, where you will find some (let's called them) "rather interesting" bits and pieces of information.
According to Devadanam, Aikido or mixed martial arts is the best form of self-defence and is generally taught to commandos of special forces.
Sailesh Varma of Association of Mixed Martial Arts India said, "Aikido is an effective self-defence technique that focuses on dislocation of joints and nerve points. On mixed martial arts, Varma said that it was a combination of several martial arts such as Judo, Aikido, Muay Thai and Karate.
Okidoki - It really is good finally to be informed about aikido! Being obviously uninformed, I thought (silly me) that aikido was something totally different. I guess it just goes to prove how little I actually know...

And that aikido is being a part of MMA ... wow, who would have known! These sneaky folks are good to keeping that a secret for so long. Most be some ninja activities for sure.

Or could it simply be that the good folks - here a martial arts instructor - of India knows something which has simply passed the rest of the world by?

And of course: This is Turkey-do style karate, just in case you wonder.

The karateka video game

If your old enough and your into playing martial arts related video games, you may remember the  Karateka video game. This mid 80's "karate" game is now more or less a classic.

The game is now being re-released, and here's a funny trailer making a couple of references to the old version.

The taekwondo face-block

Here's a short video of the (oddly enough) ever-so-popular taekwondo face-block. The title is "Karate Kick Knockout", but this is good ol' TKD.

No one quite uses the face to block an attack like these guys... Great kicking though, I'll give him that much.

A rare karate nutcase

Karate fight - Illustration from Flickr.com
This South-African dude is a rare karate nutcase for sure. For one he is a well known journalist and media figure losing his cool ... if you can say that going absolutely mental is "losing your cool".

Then, this karateka not only goes mental, he absolutely beats up a female colleague! How about that for being ka-rotty ka-razy?

the "best" part though is that it appears he used his martial arts skills to beat up his female co-worker over something as trivial as singing...

Yes folks, singing...

Apparently, the female victim told the ka-razy journalist that he should stick to his day job and stop his vocal performance.

Apparently, he didn't take too kindly to the critic, and you can go here to read about the karate madman.

And if you want to know what happened to his day job, then the answer is that he don't have one right now... Bummer.

The suck-factor in traditional martial arts

Traditional martial arts sucks? From Flickr.
I'm sure you have heard a number of times how the suck-factor in traditional martial arts (TMA) can be very high?

It goes without saying that such statements in general comes from the people who don't do TMA, or who have done some bullshido/McDojo variety of it before - typically when they were children.

Those of us who find it very meaningful to do the more traditional arts like karate, taekwondo, judo and ju-jitsu, knows that there are lots of benefits associated with this type of training. Also, it should be quite self-explanatory that not everyone aim at being MMA fighters, or train the latest and greatest "street-approved combat style of self-defense.

That's all well and fine, but there still may be some elements of truth about the suck-factor in traditional martial arts. It appears that this is more than anything a problem in the USA, and you can read more about it here.

Former karate world champ jailed

Karate - Illustration by Flickr.com
There's quite a bit of an uproar - and quite understandably so if I might add - when a British former karate world champion recently received a lean 30-month jail sentence after he was found guilty of sexual related crimes towards children.

You should definitely click over to Bournemouth Echo and read the whole story for yourself ... if you have the stomach for it.

Former karate world champ jailed

A former world karate champion from Poole who committed a string of sexual offences has been jailed for 30 months.
Triple world number one Tim Stephens, 50, will be released in less than half that time after pleading guilty to a total of 43 charges, in which he assaulted a woman in her sleep, groomed a teenage girl online and hoarded vast numbers of indecent photos, Bournemouth Crown Court heard.
But his former partner told the Daily Echo: "I'm disgusted with the sentence. I thought he should get at least five years."
It appears that the judge has paid more attention to the defendant than the victims in this case.

And by all means, feel free to chime in below. What's your opinion on the issue?

Karate instructor accused

Karate grading - from Wikipedia.org
It may seem like almost an everyday occurrence that there's another taekwondo or karate instructor accused of a sexual crime of some sort involving a juvenile student.

However, considering the huge number of karate or taekwondo schools and instructors/teachers out there - it's more than anything a statistical thing that these arts are taking the spotlight more often than others.

Also, let us not forget that the vast majority of martial arts teachers are honest, dedicated and trustworthy individuals.

That said - one such case is really one too many, and it involves all martial arts in a significantly negative way.

Here's an excerpt from wtsp.com regarding a recent case from Florida:
A Sarasota teacher was arrested Friday on charges he had sex with a 14-year-old student seven years ago.
According to the affidavit, the victim, now 21, told her brothers that she had sex with John Garcia, a karate instructor at the Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences, when she was in middle school.
On Febr. 7, the woman told police in a statement that during the incident Garcia dismissed the class, locked the door, and sat her in his lap. He then began to fondle her and proceeded to have sex with her. The woman said this was the first time she ever had sex.
As always, feel free to comment below.
