Martial Arts Belt Ranking does tend to be a little...strange. There are so many colored belts, what does a black belt mean, what is a master, and so on. In this article i will tell you where belt ranks came from, and what they actually mean.

Martial Arts Belts came from Japan, where it was originally used in swimming classes.

Martial Arts like Karate and Judo picked up on them because it made it easier to arrange the karate class, or judo class, and teach it.

Before then people would join a martial arts school and there were junior students and senior students, and the point was to get your Teaching certificate.

Some people didn't want to go that far, but the serious students did. After all, why do something half way? And, of course, a person who knew enough to teach would certain have sufficient self defense skills to protect himself.

In 1967 I joined a Kenpo Karate school, and the belt ranks were eight to Black Belt, and then eight after one had achieved Dan ranking, which is what a Black Belt is.

The colors were: white, orange, purple, blue, green, three stages of brown, and black. Black belts usually just put a tip, or a strip of white on the end of the belt for each advanced dan ranking.

Later, 1969, I jointed a classical school, and here was where I experienced martial arts belt ranking as it was meant to be. Sort of.

There were three belt ranks to Black Belt. These were white, green, and brown. But, to be honest, these had been subdivided into an eight and eight system.

The theory (one of the more predominant theories, I should say), was that one started as a white belt, like an unwritten piece of paper. Then one experienced the green of spring, became worn, like autumn, and finally entered winter.

This was an interesting sort of mythos. There was a logic to it, and it did describe the growing process, sort of.

But, what I noticed as the years rolled by was this: Martial Arts belt ranking doesn't matter to people who have been in the martial arts for a while.

Yes, they are important, if only to spur the beginning student on. And, one should take pride in an achievement. It takes a lot of work, a lot of stick-to-ivity, to progress through the martial arts belt ranking systems.

But the real measure here is whether a person makes it to teacher.

Why do things half way, eh?

And that is the truth about Martial Arts belt ranking.

Reaction time, in kung fu, karate, Kenpo, or any martial art, is a tricky, little animal. I say animal because it is one of the most important things you have...that you want to get rid of. It is one thing that can get you killed faster than a bullet to the brainpan.

Reaction time is reaction, which means that it is something occurring after something else has happened. Do you understand what this means? If you possess reaction time, you are moving second and behind whoever is launching a punch at your face.

Now you are forced to move, and this because of the attacker's move, rather than in keeping with what you want to do. That means you are the target, and you must get out of the way, build a good block, or whatever. It means you are not doing what you want to do.

The best way to understand this thing is if there is attacker A on the A position. And a defender B on the B position. And a third position, maybe off to the right, which we will refer to as spot C.

The amount of time it takes A to go to B, B can move to C. But B HAS TO move at the exact same moment. If B moves after A, then he is going to get his block knocked off.

And, if B moves because of something he learned, or because of his training, or because of something else, then he is moving yesterday. B must observe A 'in the now,' and he must move in accordance and not because. This is the only way for B to survive.

There is, interestingly enough, the point of view of A, and of actually being able to hit somebody. If you have seen how many misses there are in the MMA, then you will understand this. Simply, A is moving to where B is, but B is no longer there.

In other words, for A to actually strike his opponent, he must strike not to where B is, because B is going to move, and spot B is where he used to be. And he must not attempt to change mid strike, for that will destroy his base and take power out of the strike. The trick is merely to understand and analyze the one sentence: in the time A attempts to move to B, B can move to C.

To finish, let me say that many martial arts instructors talk about timing and slipping punches and that sort of thing, but they usually don't understand the equation I have presented you here. To understand this equation-in the time A goes to B, B goes to C-you should write it out, on a piece of paper, with every scenario of a combat situation you can think of. Create and Win Your Own Shaolin Contest!

You can have a Shaolin contest, or Karate or wing chun or whatever, and you can be the big time winner of the whle thing. A guy on the internet gave me the idea for this; he said he wanted to do a specific martial arts form 1000 times in 365 days.

Now doing a shaolin pattern 1000 times in 365 days is a lot, but...it can be accomplished. You could do it three times a day for a year, or ten times a day for 100 days, and it certainly seemed doable. So I wrote the fellow and asked him about it, and he said that it included a lot of other things.

His 'contest' included something like run a thousand miles, do the kata a thousand times, do 50,000 sit ups, and do 50,000 push ups. He even included read 12 books, and then he added something I don't think it is possible to do: 10,000 acts of random kindness. Man, now the thing was looking a little steep!

So I started thinking about what he had told me. Back in the 1960s John F. Kennedy got everybody in America jazzed about walking 50 miles in one day. And, the iron man Marathon started because three guys got to talking about how much swim, bike and run they could do. So, even with 10,000 acts of random kindness, the thing was possible.

Now, if you're attending some kind of school and don't have the time for a 'Shaolin' contest, you could establish lower numbers, and then do the real thing when summer rolls around. Or, if you a working stiff, maybe there's ways to do small segments during the wee, and then do a master blaster on your two days off. Or, maybe you're lucky and you just have the available time and...why not just go for it?

I mean, all you've got to lose is your bulging flesh and sloth and less than desireable habits! Correcto mundo? So why not go for it and see if you can best the contest?

So I figured you should include the following things when you hold your contest. Running, kung fu forms, and a full set of body exercises. Maybe run a couple of miles, do your kung fu form(s) 2, 3 5, or 10 times (depending on how many patterns you know), and do ten different body exercises twenty times each.

On the intense side, maybe you've got those summer blues and want to lose them, run ten miles, do your kata 20, 30, 50 times each (depending on how many kata you know), do 50 reps of 10 types of body calisthenics. Man, that would knock the flab off you, make those muscles lean and mean, and give your attitude a sharp but pleasant edge of accomplishment. If you really want to slam...get a half dozen friends and really go for it!

So that's the contest I had in mind. I think it's a great idea, and it will result in a new you. Whether you have a shaolin contest, or kung fu or taekwondo or whatever, you're going to have one heck of a blast!

Growing Ki Power by Setting up the Body with Martial Arts

Ki Power in the Martial Arts is always considered one of those mysterious magician's tricks. Nobody knows how to do it, let alone explain it, yet ki power, or chi power or qigong or whatever, has grabbed the public imagination.

What is interesting is that using the body martial arts style, there is an automatic influx of energy. Unfortunately, most people do it, never see it, and thus the effects are lost or unappreciated.

In this article I'm going to set forth a couple of rules which should help you generate more ki power. You'll find that understanding what you are doing is going to really enhance your martial arts studies.

When you sink into stance you are attaching your body to the earth. To hold the ground or to launch the body matters not, there is an attachment of the body to the earth, and from this you build your martial arts techniques.

When you sink into stance simply figure out the geometry of the body. The geometry should be based upon a triangle. The tan tien (the 'one point' located a couple of inches below the navel) is the top of the triangle, the feet provide the base.

Doesn't matter what stance - horse stance, back stance, whatever - just examine the triangle and make sure the angles of the triangle are working.

Working means that you are doing two things.

First, breathing as if to the tan tien.

Second, getting the stance lower and lower, so that you feel more weight, and thus create more energy.

Do these two things for a while, breathing and lowering, and you will find the workability of your stance, and ki power will start to invest in your body and manifest in your martial art.

Karate vs Kung Fu vs taekwondo...or whatever...it doesn't matter. The stance is the thing. The art is a stylistic interpretation of the stance...and the tricks mounted upon the stances.

Now, a couple of things to look out for.

Don't turn the feet too far in or two far out, seek an alignment of the feet that supports the intention (direction) of the stance. This can be confusing until you realize the simplicity of function.

Keep the hips inside the feet, lest your triangle topple.

Relax.

Breath in time to your motion. In when the body contracts, out when the body expands.

Do you see how simple these martial arts instructions for generating ki power are? The difficulty lies only in thinking that the stances, which is to say the various postures in the martial arts techniques, are complex, and then having to resolve them by inspection until they are simple and make sense.

Read that last sentence again, it is important, it tells you one of the reasons people insist upon making the martial arts a lo-o-ong subject to study.

The truth of the matter is that the body can be remade in as little as three months, and this includes the ability to make real and usable ki power. Witness the US army boot camp, or even one of the PX 90 infomercial ads on late night TV.

Whether you change the body, and start manufacturing ki power depends not on years of esoteric exercises that you don't understand, but simply resolving the simple stances and techniques and martial arts forms to the principles such as you read here.
