How Mixed Martial Arts Can Help Improve Your Life

You may only know mixed martial arts from what you have seen on pay per view. But did you know that mixed marital arts is something you can take on to improve your own life, even if you will never be pay per view material? Here are some ways that mixed martial arts, also known as MMA, can potentially improve your life.

Physical health

Mixed martial arts is a great way to build up your physical health, and improve your athleticism. Here is what FearlessFighting.com has to say about what MMA can do for you: "MMA presents a stimulating full body workout and a scope of demand that incorporates every energy system in the body to a degree matched by few other sports in the world." The article says that "the speed, power, and strength components of MMA engage both the body's anaerobic energy system as well as its aerobic energy system on multiple levels" and that this "type of intensity simultaneously improves musculature as well as cardiovascular endurance and overall capacity."

From kickboxing to Brazilian and New York jiu jitsu to karate to muay thai, you can increase your flexibility, build up your strength, gain stamina, and become a better all around athlete.

Self-confidence and discipline

One of the things you may learn when it comes to mixed martial arts is gaining increased self-confidence. As you learn under the tutelage of an MMA expert at increasing your skills, you may feel more confident in what you can do. The skills you learn are not mindless things, like trudging on a treadmill while watching Judge Judy. Instead, you will have to think, as well as learn. This requires real discipline. Showing the discipline, and the patience, will also help increase your self-confidence. As little as one or two classes a week in one or more of the MMA skills can not just make you more skilled an athlete, but it can help you feel more confident in your life.

Self-defense techniques

You may think that learning mixed martial arts can potentially protect you if you are in a dangerous situation. That could be true. There are a variety of skills that you can learn in self-defense via New York jiu-jitsu or other techniques that can help you immobilize a predator, or simply to stun him or her so you can run away.

In all, learning MMA can have great benefits for you.

Contrasting Aikido from the Other Martial Arts

Some people tend to equate aikido with the other forms of martial arts such as judo (which one publication described as a 'gentle sport'), karate and taekwondo while others remark that it is no martial art at all (because no one wins prizes in it) and that it is ineffective martial arts form. Questions like this will also sprout and such misunderstanding will continue to stay in the air. As an aikidoka should be calm when facing aggression, one needs to be patient to clarify on the issues about aikido not being effective as a martial art or if it is really martial arts.

Is aikido another form of martial arts? Yes, it is and it does as what judo, karate and kung fu do: At the physical level, it addresses self-defence. An aikidoka deals with being attacked and executes the techniques when needed to deal with the attacker. In this case, it is indeed a form of martial arts at all.

But if you are going to look deeply in the fighting methods, you will come to understand that aikido is different from the others. For starters, as the attacker rushes to attack the victim, the latter, instead of counter-attacking, waits to apply the technique to pin down their attacker. This is not what you can check out in traditional self-defence. The aikido has to remain calm to bring out the technique as the attacker comes near and with a presence of mind, gets the attacked off the balance by usually using one hand to hold the attacker's elbow and the other hand to the attacker's wrist and bring them to the ground.

A violent or even bloody response to an attack is greatly no-no in aikido. All the great master, even if they modify the techniques in their own dojos or teach differently to their students, still emphasise on the non-destructive approach. A violent or bloody counter-attack can ruin one's peace and harmony within oneself, something an aikidoka must never do. One needs not to be aggressive or violent to be skilful in martial arts and no amount of blood can determine a successful execution of self-defence.

Judokas, taekwando jins, karatedos, kung fu artists and other practitioners or various martial arts are taught to defeat their opponent. This is not the case in aikido, and this is why there are no competitions for it but only demonstrations. Aikido philosophy teaches that if you fight with an aim to defeat your opponent, your own fighting mind have already defeated your first even if you and your attacker have not start fighting yet. How is this so?

With the aim to defeat your opponent or to inflict serious harm on your attacker, you take yourself out of your harmony, and by putting yourself out of your harmony, you begin to think you are vulnerable. This action places you in the duality of defender/attacker. Because your fighting mind instils in you the need to defeat and injure your opponent, you lost all respect for life.

One needs not to exhibit martial arts skills in competitions or defeat someone and inflict harm to show one's mastery over the other. Doing so just proves one has no presence of mind but the feeling of being vulnerable. If that is what martial arts should be so, then Sydney aikido is no martial arts at all.

If you are looking for a peaceful approach to martial arts, Sydney aikido is the right martial arts for you. Please visit Shin Sen Dojo today and watch a demonstration. Please visit our website for more details. Rate this Article

Five Things You Did Not Know About Martial Arts

It is likely that you know someone who does martial arts and you wondered what pleasure they find in doing them. If you do not know what benefits abound in this type of exercise, you are in for surprise. There are so many benefits associated with this age old type of aerobics you will want to join a club as soon as you finish reading this article. Whether you are interested in a weight loss program, cardiovascular health or just trying to improve your moods in general, there is no better form of exercise than martial arts.

Better cardiovascular health

Research has shown that martial arts play a great role in improving a person's cardiovascular health. When talking about cardiovascular health we are dealing with all the organs involved in transporting blood throughout your body including your heart, veins and arteries. When things are not right with your cardiovascular system you risk getting heart attacks at worst but generally you will experience fatigue, general weakness and shortness of breath. Aerobic exercises are recommended for the improvement and strengthening of the cardiovascular system; try exercises such as swimming, biking or walking but martial arts will beat them all.

Losing weight

Weight loss is such a popular subject these days since people have come to associate obesity with a number of lifestyle diseases. It is estimated that a single pound of fat is equal to about 3500 calories. Anyone who wants to lose one pound weekly needs to ensure they eliminate at least 500 calories a day. You only need to spend at least one hour doing martial arts and you will have burned 500 calories without much ado.

Improved muscle tone

People who participate in martial arts are known to have a highly improved muscle tone. You should know that the appearance of your body is related to your muscle tone and the higher the muscle tone, the greater your metabolic rate will be. You will be able to burn more calories every day and in the process keep obesity at bay. With a greater muscle tone you also enhance your agility such that you will not be prone to falling carelessly in old age.

Improved reflexes

Martial arts require highly refined and fast reflexes. While performing martial arts will help improve your reflexes as you become more experienced, the same reflex action will definitely be transferred to other aspects of your life giving you faster reaction times in everything you do. You can imagine how important such can be in activities such as driving.

Mood improvement

There are sufficient research findings that indicate that people who participate in daily exercise schedules have a highly improved mood. By participating in martial arts you will not only be perfecting your physical body but also relieving yourself of stress and frustration as well as creating an environment of happiness. The good news is that you will not feel the effects of the activity you will be doing because the endorphins produced by your body as a result of the physical activity will remain in your body for up to four hour after you have finished.
